The Škocjan caves Regional Park

This park has been named after Škocjanske jame, the magnificent network of underground caverns through which the Reka, or Velika Voda, flows.

The caves themselves are on the Unesco World Heritage list, and they are the first subterranean wetland to be included on the Ramsar list of internationally important wetlands, while the biodiversity has earned the park a place in the Man and Biosphere (MAB) world network of biosphere reserves. In a relatively small area the visitor is presented with an exceptional wealth of karstic features, a wide variety of flora and fauna, and the rich cultural heritage of archaeological finds and typical Karst villages with their attractive monuments to the local building tradition.
