Sport flying and hang gliding

The expanse of the Karst plateau and the hilly surrounding slopes can also be experienced from the air. Not far from Divača, in the middle of the grassy Ležeški Gabrk under Vremščica, lies one of Slovenia’s oldest airfields, which is still operational. It was laid out during the First World War for the needs of the Austro-Hungarian Air Force, which tested new aircraft here for the conflict on the Soča (Isonzo) Front. Today the Divača Airfield is an attractive location for recreational and sports flying and for gliding, and it is also visited by model aircraft enthusiasts, paragliders and hang-gliders flying down from Vremščica. Although this is not an international airport, an appointment can be made with the customs service, or formalities can be conducted at the nearby (19 nm) international airport of Portorož (LJPZ). The airfield is used at one’s own risk, and advance notice is appreciated. By prior arrangement, the Karst Aviation Centre offers panoramic flights across the whole of Slovenia and in Europe.
